Northgate Christian Fellowship — Benicia, CA

CWE has been involved with the planning and engineering of the first two phases of this North Bay church. Phase 1 included the construction of a 6,740 square foot multi-use building, four modular buildings totaling 5,520 square feet, and associated parking and landscaping. The project also included the extension of an existing off-site 48” storm drain on the north side of Lake Herman Road to allow for street widening. On-site storm drainage design required the construction of an above-ground detention basin on the side of a hill within the property to control storm peak flows.

The second and latest phase saw the construction of a 22,035 square foot, 500+ seat sanctuary building and new parking for a total development envelope of approximately 2.9 acres. One challenge with this phase of construction included designing improvements around an existing 30-foot-wide easement which contained an existing 36-inch City water main that prevented any development over the easement. Another challenge with this phase arose from planning the current and future parking areas to meet desired occupancy requirements while preventing development within an existing conservation easement near the boundaries of the site. Stormwater treatment goals were also important due to the project’s proximity to the San Francisco Bay, so this project incorporated underground stormwater detention, proprietary media filters for stormwater treatment, and existing vegetative buffers to provide additional treatment for stormwater as it discharged from the site.

Construction value: Phase 1 – $1 million

Phase 2 – $1.5 million

Completion date: Phase 1- 2004

Phase 2- 2014

Laguna Chinese Baptist Church — Elk Grove, CA

This project involved the construction of a 13,684 square foot single story Christian Education Building. As part of this expansion, the project required a heavy-duty concrete walkway / fire access to the east of the existing building and around the back to connect to the existing concrete fire access on the north side of the building.  Other improvements included new sidewalks to provide access to the new building and associated landscaping, storm drain modifications and underground utility extensions.

Construction value: $1 million

Completion date: 2012

Bethel Church — Redding, CA

This project included the construction of new parking lots for a total of approximately 20 acres of newly developed area.  Due to the undeveloped land and hilly terrain around the new improvements, the storm drainage system was designed to allow stormwater to cascade down the steep slopes of the parking areas in rock ditches and filter back into the ground below. This project was notable for including the design of a detention basin in the area of an existing ball field to meter stormwater runoff peak flows and mitigate project impacts downstream.  This basin necessitated construction of an earthen berm at the eastern limits of the ball field.  The minimal depth and natural shapes of the basin blended with the surrounding areas and continued to allow the area to be utilized as a play field for softball and soccer.

Construction Value: $5.2 million

Completion Date: 2006
